Javanese Silk Batik Sarong. These handmade traditional silk sarongs from the island of Java in Indonesia are truly a collector's item. Rather than using the modern hot wax method of separating colors to print the fabric, this technique has the lines that separate the colors sewn in with heavy thread, making hundreds of stitches throughout the sarong. Then each area is dipped by hand, into the dye, to achieve the desired color - you can imagine what a lengthy process this is!
The threads are then removed, but the needle points remain, as you will see; these will disappear after washing and ironing - we've left the needle points intact, authenticating this old world technique. It's another one of the disappearing arts from an old culture. Color variations are a natural part of the dying process. Made of soft, luxurious silk.
